Carbon capture, utilization and storage

Burning fossil fuels for energy generation is a significant source of carbon dioxide emissions. Most manufactured carbon dioxide (CO2) is emitted by coal-fired or gas-fired power plants. Massive quantities of CO2 are released in the production and segregation of natural gas and in industries such as cement, iron, and steel. CCUS (Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage) addresses long-term storage of captured carbon dioxide in subsurface geological structures.

This course provides perspectives on climate and energy transition. It covers all aspects of CCUS, including transport, storage, and monitoring. It explores the challenges of the current technology of geological storage, monitoring, and verification, including case studies from CCUS projects worldwide. A number of those technologies are widely used in the oil industry. Effective implementation of CCUS will require economic encouragement, proper legislation, transparency on liability matters, and approval from the public as well. These aspects of CCUS and associated opportunities for skilled organizations will also be presented during this training.

What you will learn

  • Carbon capture, utilization, and storage and its role in reducing emissions
  • The different principles of CO2 capture
  • New technologies for low carbon energy supply with CO2 capture and storage (CCUS)
